It’s with great sadness that today we heard the news that our Drum Major John Gooding has passed away after an illness.

John was always a great friend to the band and many of our musicians. A few years ago after a lot of deliberation we wanted to do more high profile engagements, to do this we decided to become a marching band. We were then booked to do Lincolnshire Show 2016, something the band has always wanted to do. Some of the band are from military backgrounds and some had marched before but our first few Sunday morning rehearsals were a little ropey, to say the least! Then, someone said “Have you thought of asking John to come along? with his vast experience he would be the perfect person to help us out”. John was with us on the parade square the following Sunday, from then on everything fell into place, John had a knack of ironing out little problems and getting us looking professional on the march. We were naturally quite nervous when show day came along as it was our first ever marching job! Having John lead us into the main arena was an absolute honour and the rest is history, we then soon asked John to be our resident Drum Major to which he accepted. We’ve since performed at the Lincolnshire show every year since (apart from 2020 due to Covid) plus other marching and ceremonial events with John at the front.

We will miss you John Gooding, Thank you so much for all you have done for us and may you Rest in Peace. Our thoughts are with John’s wife Sarah, and all his family.
