On Sunday the 7th May we held our Spring Concert at The Pride of Lincoln which was focussed on a best of British theme. The band opened the concert to a wonderful piece of music called Prismatic Light by Alan Fernie which we have been rehearsing hard on for the past few weeks. We also played some other classic British band arrangements and marches which went down a storm with the audience, including music from Oliver and Phantom of the Opera, we dedicated The Dambusters to Lincoln City Football club who were promoted back into the football league this season and used this as their theme and our principle trombone player Dan Clark performed a solo called “In the wee small hours” which he arranged himself.

During the concert we had some special presentations to make. John Hicks joined the band over 24 years ago after his wife bought him a trombone, John taught himself how to read music and play the instrument, he soon found himself throwing himself in the deep end and joining what was then The Lincolnshire Concert Band. John spent many happy years playing with the band and serving as a committee member assisting in the running of the band, unfortunately recently John decided it was time to retire from the band, our Chairman James Kirk made a special presentation to John during the concert and John said a few words, we wish John all the best for his retirement from the band and he’s already on our mailing list so we hope he can come and see us often.

Also during the concert it was time to present The Bandsman of the Year shield which is given out every year to a certain band member who has shown particular dedication to the band or to improving their ability musically, historically this award has been chosen by the Director of Music but over the past few years we decided that the band members will decide using a secret ballot. This year the award was presented to Alastair Kirk who is currently one of our two Tuba players and Band Secretary, Alastair has also served as Band manager over the past 3 years and won the vote due to his dedication to keeping the band running smoothly and putting in so much work behind the scenes assisting in organising concerts and engagements.

We also had to say goodbye to two of our woodwind players Rachael & Becca. They both joined the band 3 years ago when they moved to Lincoln to study at Lincoln University, it was also Becca’s 21st Birthday on the day of the concert. We are sad to see them leave but glad they came along to the band during their time in Lincoln and made music with us, we wish them both the very best for the future and please come back and see us if you ever find yourselves near Lincoln.
